Blog 1 – Museum at Prairiefire – Petra Van Court

The Museum at Prairiefire offers several dynamic approaches to natural history, science, and culture. I chose to blog about this building because of its beautiful stained glass exterior. It also uses a multitude of colored metals in a shingle-like pattern to create a seamless transition into the geometric design of the walls. This building looks like a castle out of a fantasy to me and reminds me of the happy memories I made touring it with my coaches and some of my closest friends after a long week of competition at a national debate tournament.

Blog Four- Danna Flores- Thurman J. White Forum

Thurman J. White Forum, is located directly behind Couch restaurants on the University of Oklahoma’s campus.  My first encounter with this building was 3 years ago, where I found myself lost walking inside trying to find where I was suppose to be. For me, this building has been full of happy memories, because this is where many multicultural  events happen and also conferences that I feel have really impacted my time here at OU .  What drives me to write about this building is the layout of the building.  To me, the layout of is a bit confusing, the rooms are in shape of a honey combs and if you were to see a top view of the layout it looks like honey combs connected together to make on larger building. Overall, it’s not the most eye appealing building but I would like to know the reason behind the design of this building!

Gretchen Hollrah – Norman Public Library Central – Blog 4

I chose to write about the new Norman Public Library because I just love the way it is designed both on the outside and inside. When I first saw the library being built in town, I had no idea what to expect as to what the building was going to turn out to be. When I learned it was going to be the new library, I was excited to see what the finished product would be. The design of the building is an open concept with lots of windows to allow natural lighting in, which is one of my favorite kinds of design concepts for buildings.

The Paneum: Blog 5, Tyra Jones

Coop Himmelblau, also rendered Coop Himmelb(l)au, an avant-garde architecture firm that rose to prominence in the 1980s and ’90s. The two central members were Wolf D. Prix (b. December 13, 1942, Vienna, Austria) and Helmut Swiczinsky (b. January 13, 1944, Poznań, Poland).

Coop Himmelblau was founded in 1968 by Prix, Swiczinsky, and Rainer Michael Holzer; Holzer left the partnership in 1971. The firm’s name—German for “Blue-Sky Cooperative”—was a wordplay describing their efforts to “make architecture light and fluctuating like clouds.”

This European firm produces really cool designs. One of the most interesting buildings I have seen by these designers includes the Paneum, a four-story event and information center located in Asten Netherlands. This building is beautiful and funky. The top is meant to resemble kneaded bread, important to the owner’s company, and functions as the studio space. The bottom, visually symbolic of a bread box to me, holds the event rooms

The entire space is visually dynamic  and very inviting. If I ever get the chance to visit the Netherlands, this futuristic Paneum is my first stop.

Blog Four – Bizzell Library – Norman, OK

This place is something that I can honestly say has had a positive influence on me since the first day I came to OU. I am curious as to how many hours I have spent in this special building at my school. This building has given me so much. Everything from study rooms, sources for projects and research papers, printers, computers, IT staff, and so many more resources. I think I can also say that I walk into this building at least five times a week. That is more than any other building on campus. Not only has this place given me so much, which I greatly appreciate, but the building’s design is also incredible. I saw some articles regarding the nation’s top libraries, and the “Biz” was one of the top ones! As a student here at OU, I and others are so lucky to have a great library like this. One of my favorite rooms in the building is the Great Reading Room. At first, when you walk into it the room it seems intimidating. However, I have spent so much time there, now I never feel that way. Now every time I walk into the room and look around, it reminds me of history. I’m not exactly sure why but I think it’s because of how famous and old it is. Even when my older siblings and father were here they went to that room to study.  The Bizzell is incredible!

Gretchen Hollrah – Meow Wolf – Blog 3

Meow Wolf is an art exhibit building in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It’s kind of like an interactive art museum, which looks like a normal building from the outside and then has insanely detailed exhibits inside such as the one pictured above. I visited this place last year when I was visiting some friends in New Mexico, and it was definitely one of the coolest buildings that I had been inside of to date. There are lights of all different colors, everything was built in an interesting way with all sorts of different building materials. If you are ever in Santa Fe, I would recommend stopping at Meow Wolf.

blog three – Danna Flores- St. Thomas More

St. Thomas More,  a new building on OU’s campus that faces the dorms.  St. Thomas more was recently finished in 2019. My first encounter, was last semester when I attend mass there for the first time since the new building had opened.  Growing up in Southeastern Oklahoma, there was never many kids my age that were catholic, so when I  go to St. Thomas More, I always feel a sense of belonging, because I am surrounded by young Catholics. More than anything, It is a place where I go to find peace . Architecturally, the  church was designed to match the Cherokee Gothic style seen throughout OU’s Campus, with a long isle for it to be a “brides church”.

As I progressed throughout my life, one building that was extremely influential to me was the school I attended growing up. This building is one that I interacted with each and every day and shaped me into who I am today. From the first day I saw the school, I was amazed by the architectural aspects of the exterior. Also, the surrounding campus had its own distinctive aspects that set it apart from other campuses in the city. Without seeing the interior of the building, I was inspired and knew that it would be an atmosphere that I can excel in and better my future.

This particular building is known as Cascia Hall Preparatory School, which is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As one can see from the images below, this building is an extremely beautiful and unique. This school was founded in 1926 by the Order of St. Augustine, and the first structures of the school were built in the same year. It was originally a boarding school for men only, but in 1986 the school evolved into a co-educational day school. This required the school to architecturally adapt to these changes by renovating the building itself. Most of these renovations remain the same today with only a few additions in the past 34 years. This is what makes the building so unique and picturesque.

This building, and the surrounding campus, always affected me in a positive way. This is because I never failed to create unforgettable memories and experiences each day I attended. Although there were times of negatively, just being surrounded by the building and campus allowed me to continually find the positives in the hard times I was experiencing. With that in mind, another way this building positively impacted me was hearing from those whom saw the school for the first time. There were countless times when others complemented the beauty and the distinctive aspects of the building, which caused me to feel extremely blessed to be able to attend such a building on a daily basis.

Gretchen Hollrah – “The Abandoned Ed Noble Pkwy Building” – Blog 2

This building is interesting to me because I can remember when I was a child and thought it was so cool that they were building a new restaurant on the water. As I grew older, this building has still sat in the same spot unoccupied. There could have been a lot of good investments made in this building, but it doesn’t seem like anything will ever happen with it. It’s become a sort of joke amongst people who have lived in Norman for a while.

This a picture of Hedingham Castle in England. I was around the age of 11 or 12 when I visited it. My dad was stationed in England at RAF Mildenhall for the Air Force. It was the first castle I saw while living there as I seen plenty of others. Being so young, I was in amazement of actually seeing a castle firsthand as I had only seen them in the movies. From a young age, it has inspired me to travel more and see more historic buildings and places. There are many more castles in the world that I would like to go see. I went to many of the big ones in England, and a few in Germany. Living in Europe, gave me the opportunity to experience and see things that many people in this lifetime won’t be able to experience. My dad being in the military gave us that chance. This castle is small compared to a lot of others in the country but for being the first one, it was an eye-opening experience. I wish when we lived over there, that we were able to go and see more historic places but there is just so many. One of the things about the castle that I enjoyed was the inside and all the artifacts on display. I am a history fanatic, and getting to visit this castle and all the other places really made me love history even more.
