Steven Holl: Jake Buchanan

Vanke Center located in Shenzhen, China is another famous work and probably the one that stood out most to me. The building is interesting because it has the same amount of space as any normal skyscraper would but this one actually extends horizontally in a few different directions giving it a nickname of “the horizontal skyscraper”. It is stunning with the pond at the bottom and how far the building actually sticks out is incredible.

Pratt Institute (the insertion portion) is another work by Steven Holl. The building is located in Brooklyn, New York. The insertion was done in 2005 and connected two of the main buildings. It has an entrance on the west and mainly consists of a lobby and a gallery. A cool addition to the Pratt Institute but not much..

The Stretto house is another work by Steven Holl. The building sits in Dallas, Texas and the house projects the character of the site through a series of concrete “spatial dams” with metal framed “aqueous space” flowing through them. I believe it is used just as a normal house and no special event but it is a fascinating building.

One of Steven Holl’s first buildings was actually the Hybrid Building in Seaside, Fl. I have actually been to this place many times and what is cool about it is that it actually sits in the side of the small town in the plaza. The building isn’t large or extravagant but simple and recognizable. It’s a small building with a couple businesses sitting inside the base. I believe above is a small apartment complex as well.

Jacob Buchanan-Blog #4-Gaylord Memorial Stadium

Gaylord Memorial Stadium a.k.a. “The Palace” is located in Norman, Oklahoma and it is where our beloved Sooner football team plays. After the renovations done on the South side of the stadium, it became arguably one of the best college football stadiums in the entire nation. I have been coming to this place year after year my entire life watching the best players come and go. There will never be another place like this one and I cannot wait for the many years I come back here and reminisce about my days in College and even when I was a child. It will always remind me of the fond memories I have had there and the more I am going to make in the future.

Jacob Buchanan-Blog #3-Devon Tower

Located in Oklahoma City stands the tallest building in the state, Devon Tower. Growing up in OKC, I always saw the chase building (located to the right of the Devon Tower) as the tallest building. When you are young, you look at it and think no building could be taller than that right? Well as time passed and I became aware of the taller buildings located around the U.S., I still hadn’t seen one that just towered over everyone. It was always the Chase building or on occasion we visited Dallas and got to see the city. After the Devon Tower was completed I actually visited there and ate at the top of it. It’s actually insane how far you can see from the building and crazier at how far away you can be to see it. Take a look for yourself next time you’re on the rooftop of Volare on Campus Corner.

Jacob Buchanan-Blog #2-Walt Disney Concert Hall

Located in the center of Los Angeles, this concert hall is a step down or two from that of Sydney’s Opera house. It has one of the most spectacular looks to a building that I have seen. Like my previous blog I have actually never set foot in the hall. I also have actually never seen it with my own eyes either. I chose the building because I have always found the physical structure of the building quite fascinating. It seems like every part of it is loose from the rest and there is no solid base. I hope one day I could visit and maybe even see some sort of show there.

Jacob Buchanan-Blog #1-Fountain Place

Fountain place in my opinion is the prettiest and most remarkable tower in Dallas, Texas. The building is sixty stories high and is the fifteenth tallest skyscraper in Texas. The reason behind this choice is because I admire the architecture of the actual structure of the building. It is fascinating how they managed to “cut” the tower down diagonally to give it the shape that is has. The glass around the building mirrors everything that surrounds it. Unfortunately I have actually never stepped foot in it but based on images, it looks like it has a unique interior. I feel that every time I drive through Dallas (or even around the city), I always find myself looking at this particular building.
